Pregnancy Safe Facials: What You Can (and Can't) Have When Pregnant

Pregnancy Safe Facials: What You Can (and Can't) Have When Pregnant

One of the questions we hear most at the clinic is some version of: "I'm pregnant, can I still have a facial?" The short answer is yes. Past 12 weeks, a facial is not only safe, it can be one of the kindest things you do for skin that suddenly has a mind of its own. The longer answer is that not every facial, and not every ingredient, is pregnancy appropriate, which is exactly why we built a dedicated Pregnancy Facial rather than quietly adapting a standard one.

Here is what actually changes for your skin during pregnancy, what to avoid, what is safe, and how we approach it at The Face Tonic in Bishop's Stortford.

What pregnancy does to your skin

Pregnancy hormones affect almost everything, and skin is no exception. Every pregnancy is different, but the changes we see most often in clinic are:

  • Breakouts and congestion. Rising hormone levels can increase oil production, so even people who have never had spots can suddenly find them appearing.
  • Pigmentation. Melasma, sometimes called "the mask of pregnancy", causes patches of darker skin, often across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. Sun exposure makes it worse, which is why SPF matters more than ever.
  • Sensitivity. Products you have used happily for years can start to sting or flush the skin.
  • Dryness and dullness. Your body is redirecting a lot of resources, and hydration levels in the skin often drop.

None of this means your skin is misbehaving. It is responding to an enormous amount of change, and it needs support rather than aggressive correction.

What to avoid in facials and skincare while pregnant

This is well-established general guidance rather than a scare list. During pregnancy, most practitioners and prescribers advise avoiding:

  • Retinoids (retinol, retinal, tretinoin and related vitamin A derivatives) in skincare and professional treatments.
  • High-strength chemical peels, particularly deeper salicylic and glycolic acid peels. Very low strengths in rinse-off products are generally considered fine, but strong professional peels wait until after baby.
  • Hydroquinone and other prescription-strength pigmentation treatments.
  • Certain machine-based treatments, including laser treatments and microneedling, which are routinely postponed until after pregnancy as a precaution.
  • Essential-oil-heavy or strongly fragranced products, which are more likely to irritate newly sensitive skin.

If you are ever unsure about a specific product or treatment, ask your GP or midwife. And tell your facialist you are pregnant, even if it is early days and you are not announcing yet. We treat that information with complete discretion, and it changes what we put on your skin.

So what is safe?

Plenty. Gentle cleansing, light enzyme-based exfoliation, hydrating masks, facial massage, and barrier-supporting moisturisers and SPF are all considered pregnancy safe. In other words, most of what makes a facial feel wonderful is still on the table. The skill is in knowing which actives to leave out and how to adapt the treatment, including how you are positioned on the bed, so you are comfortable throughout.

Our Pregnancy Facial in Bishop's Stortford

We created our Pregnancy Facial specifically for expecting and new mums whose skin needs a little extra support. It uses pregnancy-safe products throughout and is suitable from the second trimester (past 12 weeks) through to post-pregnancy, so you can keep coming after baby arrives too.

The treatment is one hour and includes:

  • The Face Tonic signature four-step cleanse
  • Gentle micro-exfoliation
  • An enzyme peel, the pregnancy-safe way to brighten and smooth
  • Lifting and sculpting facial massage
  • A refreshing hydrojelly mask
  • A bespoke neck and shoulder massage while the mask works
  • Moisturiser and SPF to finish

It is £127 for the hour, and it is delivered by therapists who genuinely understand the journey, because several of us have been there ourselves. This facial is as much about how you feel as the visible results. All of the products we use in clinic are fragrance-free, which matters when your nose and your skin are both more reactive than usual.

We will also help you understand what your skin is doing at this stage and what to use at home, without selling you anything you do not need. That is a house rule, pregnant or not.
